Silicone Tapes
All tapes meet 14 CFR 25.853(a) at amendment 25-116; Appendix F, Part I(a)(1)(i) (60 Second Vertical Flammability Test).
Rohr Goodrich Aerostructures RMS315 Silicone Rubber Self Fusing Electrical Tape
Type I / Type II / Type III
500°F / 260°C Continuous Exposure: Higher Intermittent
FlameShieldä Rohr Goodrich Aerostructures RMS315 silicone rubber self-fusing tape meets MIL-I-46852 / A-A-59163 / MIL-I-22444 specification for use in avionics wiring. Popular for protecting wiring at the backshell clamp.
The RMS315 tape has no adhesive, but sticks to itself (self-fuses or self amalgamating) when stretched and wrapped onto itself. The tape starts curing within minutes, and after several hours cannot be unwound or removed without using a sharp knife or blade. This tape makes a waterproof, weatherproof and air tight protection. Used to protect wiring at the backsheel clamp by forming a custom sized isolation bushing.
The standard RMS315 tape is oxide-red in color, but black is also available. Other colors available.
Type I tape has a sinusoidal weave glass support layer. Type II tape is a triangular profile unsupported. Type III tape is rectangular profile unsupported.
FlameShieldä tape provides superior electrical insulation with a minimum of 300 volts per mil (.001") of tape thickness at 365°F / 180°C. A 20mil tape therefore provides 6000 volts per wrap of insulation value.
RMS315 tape is also used to wrap hydraulic connections and to make vibration resistant bumpers and spacers for wiring, cable, hose, pipes and lines. This tape is used to wrap and hold insulation in place on hot air ducts. Makes an in-situ bushing for protecting wiring at the backshell clamp.
